We love a statement piece. Obviously. But we also get why a sequined bomber, chunky necklace or very colourful pair of trousers can feel a lot easier to fall in love with than to actually wear on a random Tuesday morning.
The good news? You really don’t need a special occasion. In fact, we think statement pieces look best when you don’t try too hard.
Here are five ways we wear ours.
1. Let one piece do the work
Probably our most-used styling trick: one statement, keep the rest easy.
Throw a colourful or sequined STYGR bomber over jeans and a white tee. Or wear a chunky necklace with a simple knit. Or add a crazy bag to an otherwise all-black outfit.
You don’t need five interesting things happening at once. Sometimes one is more than enough.
2. Wear it with the things you already own
A statement piece doesn’t need an entirely new outfit built around it.
Actually, please don’t.
The easiest way to make something bold feel like you is to wear it with the pieces you already reach for all the time. Your favourite jeans, oversized shirt, simple tee, black trousers, sneakers, whatever your uniform is.
That’s when a statement piece stops being that special thing in your wardrobe and becomes something you actually wear.
3. Steal a colour from your statement piece
This is such an easy one.
If your bomber has a little lilac, pink or burgundy running through it, pick up that colour somewhere else. A sock, bag, top, necklace, nothing too matchy-matchy.
4. Mix fancy with not-so-fancy
Sequins with denim. A chunky necklace over a grey sweatshirt. A shiny bomber with sneakers. A pretty blouse with loose trousers.
We love that contrast.
In fact, one of our favourite ways to wear a statement piece is to make everything around it a little more casual. It instantly takes away that am I too dressed up? feeling.
Because no, you’re not saving the good stuff for dinner.
5. Just wear the damn thing
This might be the most important one.
We hear it all the time in our Haarlem store: “I love it, but where would I wear it?”
Our answer? Everywhere.
To work. School pick-up. Drinks. The supermarket. Dinner. A random Wednesday.
Our bombers especially have taught us this over the years. Customers come back for their second or third one and still tell us how often strangers stop them to ask where their jacket is from.
And that’s kind of the point.
Statement doesn't have to mean difficult
At STYGR, we’ve never been very good at making things that quietly disappear into your wardrobe. Our signature bombers, colourful jewelry, bags and clothing are made to stand out, but also to actually be worn.
Most of our collection is made by us in our Haarlem atelier, in small batches and usually from fabrics, beads and materials that made us think: okay, we need to make something with this.
So our final styling advice is pretty simple:
Wear the fun stuff. Even on a Tuesday.
